We love reclaiming objects and materials at Hope - however, there are times when we question if certain things are worth keeping to repurpose.
These handmade pavers created by our co-founder's parents were always keepers. They poured the concrete and pressed shells and ceramics from their collection. They imprinted leaves from their garden. They even inscribed their initials "KA" and "MA." Who ever thought that pavers would hold so much personality and creativity?
They are absolute treasures.
The bricks on the other hand... we were on the fence about what to do with them. They come from the garden of our co-founder's mother, Kena Alonso. In that garden, these bricks lined the sidewalks to allow more room for navigating in her wheelchair. Because of this, they also remind us of an emotionally heavy and difficult time. It felt significant to change the narrative of the bricks. What if the bricks could have a new life at Hope? What if we could create something that celebrates and re-contextualizes the story, the history of an object?
All of that to say... we kept the bricks.
We haven't figured out how we'll use them yet, but we know that they will definitely have a story to tell.
